Hi there! I hope your New Year is starting out well!
I don’t know about you, but I get overwhelmed by all of the posts and emails about New Year’s resolutions.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think goal setting is extremely important.
Yet, I also think it’s just as important to reflect on your accomplishments and what is going well in your life.
This is because as humans, we’re quick to forget about our accomplishments. We move on to the next goal or dream without really reflecting on what we have achieved.
Why Should We Reflect on Our Achievements?
1. Improve Your Self-Confidence
If you are feeling down about yourself it is helpful to look back at things you have done well. By reflecting on your achievements you will realize that you are capable of accomplishing amazing things. This will help you to feel more confident about your abilities.
2. Improve Self Awareness
By taking the time to reflect on your achievements you will gain a better understanding of your emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. You will also gain a better understanding of what motivates you to succeed.
3. Learn From The Past
When you are working toward your new goals or resolutions you can learn from your past accomplishments. What worked for you to meet your goal? What didn’t work? How can you set yourself up for success? When you reflect on your past achievements you will begin to see patterns of what lead to your success.
4. Gain Perspective
When you focus on what is not going well in your life it is very unlikely that you will achieve your goals and dreams. By celebrating your success and focusing on what you have overcome you will gain a positive perspective about your life. It can be helpful to include things that you consider mistakes on your achievement board. This is because mistakes are always lessons.
Success is not measured by what you accomplish, but by the opposition you have encountered and the courage with which you have maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.
How to Create Your Achievement Board
Creating an achievement board is similar to creating a vision board. The difference is that instead of making a board of what you want to achieve, you create a board about what you have already achieved.
You can use a bulletin board, a journal, a poster board. It can be a small piece of paper that you can tape to your bathroom mirror. Whichever works best for you. Just make sure to leave room for new accomplishments!
If you are crafty, you can cut out pictures from magazines or draw your own pictures. You may have awards or photos of times in your life that you are proud of. The following is a list of ideas for achievements to include on your board:
- Education-based accomplishments (ex. earned a Master’s Degree)
- Health achievements (ex. ran a 5k, learned to swim)
- Career achievements
- Family achievements
- Vacations you enjoyed
- Places you’ve visited
- Skills you have learned
- Things you have tried
- Things you have done for other people that you are proud of
- People that you are grateful for
- Challenges you overcame
- Favorite quotes
These are examples to get you started. Feel free to include anything you have achieved and feel proud of.
